With mountains and rivers throughout the city, it is no surprise that Lynchburg, Virginia, has no shortage of beautiful natural attractions.

According to the Parks and Rec website, “Part of the James River Heritage Trail System, Lynchburg’s trails are a diverse network of biking, hiking, and walking trails passing through lush natural areas and the heart of Lynchburg’s historic downtown.”

One of the most loved trails in Lynchburg is the Riverwalk Trail. It stretches for 3.5 miles, crossing onto Percival’s Island and winding along the James River.

“It’s really peaceful, so if you like walking along the river or seeing the water flow at some point in the trail, come check it out,” Rebecca Hartman stated. “It’s really enjoyable.”

Bethany Butler and Brianna Darius both enjoy visiting the trail to run. They said it is one of the flattest and widest trails to run in Lynchburg.

“It’s really beautiful and safe and open,” Butler described. “You can do lots of different things on the trail. It’s good for all ages.”

Not only are there breathtaking trails to explore, but Lynchburg also has over 850 acres of parkland. According to the Parks and Rec website, “Our parks are diverse and offer activities from wildlife and plant observation to more active pursuits such as fishing, hiking, biking, tennis, basketball, and other recreational opportunities.”

One of the most loved parks in Lynchburg is the Riverside Park. The park includes the Alpine Trail, a playground, a splashground, tennis and basketball courts, a transportation exhibit, and a gazebo.

Jordan Moser reflected on the atmosphere after his first true visit to the park.

“It seems to be very welcoming. I think that’s a good word for it,” he said. “Everybody over there just with their kids enjoying themselves, and I see people just like over here utilizing the park to its full advantage whether you’re playing basketball or taking grad pictures.”

For the past nine years, Rachel Gagen and her family has been visiting the park. She said they moved to Lynchburg to enjoy the great outdoors.

“It’s a year-round pleasure to have something like this in the middle of the city,” Gagen stated. “It’s got a lot of memories associated with it. It’s a fantastic place to be outside with friends enjoying the weather.”
